space / place

A place is the order of whatever kind.
Elements are beside one other, each situated in its own distinctive location.
A place is thus an instantaneous configuration of
positions and implies indication of stability.

A space exists when one takes into consideration
vectors of direction, velocities and time variables.
Space is composed of intersections of mobile elements,
it occurs as the effect produced by the operations that orient it.

A place is determined through objects, that are ultimately reducible
to the being-there of something dead, the law of a place.

A Space is determined through operations which specify
spaces by the actions of historical subjects.

In short, space is a practiced place,

Going means spatializing actions.
Seeing means the knowledge of an order.

An act of reading is the space produced by
the practice of a particular place: a written text.

This differentiation, between space and place, was carried out by
Michel de Certeau in his book "The Practice  of  Everyday Life"
(L'Invention du Quotidien. Vol. 1, Arts de Faire)

the smooth and the striated game

"The war machine was perhaps the first thing to be striated. That is
where free action in smooth space must have been conquered."
(Gilles Deleuze and Felix Guattari)

Although their game boards look quite similar... there is a distinctive
difference between them:

Go arranges open space and preserves possibilities.
Flow becomes constant - without destination and direction.
It territorialises and deterritorialises space.
It is strategy.

Chess divides finite space.
Movement goes from point to point.
It codes and decodes space.
It is semiology.

Chess figures are coded. They have characteristic capacities which
determine their movements, positions and confrontations.

Go-stones are stones. Simple arithmetic units with collective, anonym
function which is caused by their surroundings. They are part of a larger
arrangement and have no determined but situational characteristics.

Therefore Go is the game of connections and constellations.

smooth / striated

The smooth and the striated space are fundamentally different. Sometimes the difference is simply the opposite of the other - sometimes the distinction is much more complex and while Deleuze and Guattari
consider these two spaces to differ in nature, they also believe that the two spaces in fact exist only in mixture.

In the simplest terms, Boulez says that in a smooth spacetime
one occupies without counting, whereas in a striated space-time one
counts in order to occupy.

The Sea and the City are the smooth and striated spaces par excellence.

what are we looking for?

IMAGE-FLUX -  a synonym for THE image of our time - fluid, ultra-thin and light.

A culture of flux and instabilities needs a new kind of image. This new image is rhizomatic, virtual and curved. It´s smooth, topologic, ultra-fast and infinite with knots, folds, spirals and inflexions.
The Image-Flux replaces the old modernist image, this crystal-image raised by a culture of glass - straight, transparent, metric and hierarchic.

The passage from a culture of stabilities and of objects, with it´s Fordism and it´s industrial standards, to a culture of instabilities and of flux with it´s cyberspace and it´s instantaneous communication is looking for a new type of image.

IMAGE-FLUX.

THE CHANGE OF & THROUGH DIAGRAMS

NEW OUTLOOK
_from the 16th century pictoral to contempory virtual
_it´s getting more and more scientific
_from 1-angle viewports to multiple angles and more dimensions in virtual reality

NEW VISIBILITIES THROUGH DIAGRAMS
_the diagram allows to explore virtual volumes created by movements
_plural subjects: beeing here and elsewhere, beeing near and far, being multiple
_beeing in a continous space with different scales, directions, positions, places and movements linked together
