Image Flux

The use of glass in architecture allows us to establish a path, virtually jumping from one building to another, in time and space, creating an image flux that leads us from the XIXth century to a near future, in which our own work will be part of the continuous sequence of information that flows in the collective knowledge.
As long as we're able to leave an open door/window/façade... The images (that can be understood as containers that keeps feelings, experiences, moments, light, and every single perception that happens around architecture in a single 'package') cross the border of the building to be part of the world.

„Through a subtle alchemy, it transforms space into time and into «a constellation of time» that are nonchronological.“
„And it is precisely this world-making quality of the map that generates all its paradoxes and its multiple logics. “

„I can’t imagine that I could have worked anywhere as I do here. It’s the quiet and, perhaps, the wonderful scenery; I mean its quiet seriousness.“ Wittgenstein about his cabin in Norway

cognitive mapping

cognitive map

for movement in space – thinking of movement from one point to another- you need special information, you got from exploration and experience. this information is saved in so called cognitive maps or imaginations… cognitive maps are mental pictures of the environment, structuring perception, reaction and movement through the environment.

the process of cognitive mapping is characterized by encoding and decoding of mental representation.

it is a:
interactive process: there is a continuous interaction with the environment, so there is a continuous development of the information of space

selective process: you choose from a plurality of information only the individual interesting and essential.

structuring process: the absorbed information has to be simplified, structured and reduced to get the signification of them.

4 steps to build spatial information:

1. landmark knowledge: mark significant points
2. route knowledge: the route between the landmarks
3. build cluster: reference of the landmarks
4. survey knowledge: you get a complex picture, relative objects, connections and distances

tool to analyse
1. micro-macro readings
2. layering and separation
3. colour and information
4. narratives of space and time

being here and elsewhere

translating this clip in the language of this lecture we want to explain how easy it became to change spatial ranges and to switch from one location to another. the loss of spatial scale and the rip of time allows us to change country and place in a short time. so the real map, the geografical map, get a focus in very different ways - the new virtual map, the fantastical map give us a lot of possibilities of "zapping" - our brief in this situation is to chose how to handle with it!

virtual reality

The terms small/big optics by P. Virilio and the terms smooth/striated space by Deleuze/Guattari leads us to the question where the border between real and virtual could be drawn in today's society. This should be our topic for the next time.
The graphic above shows different types of the so called mixed reality.

we are looking for the answers...

a map is like a statistic, it is the point of view and the position of the author...

the mergence of the well-known and its products

How we said, the problem of nowadays architecture is that one, where buildings and landmarks are like jolly's in the image of a city. In earlier äras cities were defined by their special buildings (f.e. notre dame or the eiffel tower for paris, the big ben for london,...). the buildings of our years in contrast are highly exchangeable: the swiss re tower, situated in london could exist estetically also in an other city like many other examples.
the map in this way get a new status, once as an essential orientation-medium and then as a fantastical medium to imagine the own little world in fantasy.
the loss of physical boundaries and distances with their scales opens us a completely new way of life and a new way to live.

then, in a second step probably more important boundaries and limitations are coming up....

Change of society - according to the terms of the striated and smooth space from Guattari and Deleuze in Mille Plateaus.

Striated space as the territorial and clearly borderd space.
Smooth space as deterritorial space, where space is just configured through connections between nomadic points.

virtual global development

New Visibilities
The new visibilities combine several homogeneous elements. The virtual develops a continuous fragmented level which enables the projection of images, signs, diagrams, directions.

The Contemporary Cartorama
The map as surface is the interface of the world. The map converts the world into networks, processes and distances/ trajectories. The map is in between reality and abstraction, between location and delocalisation.

An Aesthetic and Political Model of the Virtual

Reality is now projected through virtuality. Virtuality captures and produces reality and transforms it.

-The Topologies:

Curves, folds, bendings of all sorts are means of projection of eternal space.

-From Artifices to Artefacts

The map is the interactive surface. The digital tools enable to position man within things instead of in front of them.

-Surfaces

The map exists as surface. The surface becomes a digital interface which displays realities virtually.

I have written some comments to your work.
sometimes it is very difficult for me to understand what is your aim. please write it down and try to explain your next step.

IN-BETWEEN MAPS & DIAGRAMS

1. New Visibilities.
Definition of Maps & Diagrams

PATTERN

at first there is the pattern. a pattern can be described as a kind of visible information.

MAP

if one is capable of figuring out certain rules that a specific pattern follows then one
is enabled to read it like a map. in this case creating a map means applying master conditions to
collected information.

DIAGRAM

overlaying maps will get you diagrams. a diagram follows at least 2 forces that are related
to each other. those are called variables. variables are created out of the overlaying process.
most common variables are time and distance.

2. The Contemporary Cartorama

.blur relation of information in maps / diagrams
.generate perspective and define boundaries
.power and effects that can be generated out of master conditions.

what can these two pictures of gursky be described as?
at least they are patterns that's for sure. but they could also very well
work as maps if we could figure out the code to read them. is it an
ethic barriage that refuses to make the master conditions visible?
if  we compare the two we will get a diagram of time and distance.
but what does it say?
